THE MID-ATLANTIC POWER PATHWAY SOLUTION

The Mid-Atlantic Power Pathway, a proposed 500- kilovolt transmission line, will enhance electric reliability in the Mid-Atlantic region. The only south-to-north line being proposed, it will:

  • Improve the flow of electricity on Maryland’s western shore.
  • Complement other proposed transmission projects in transporting bulk energy throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.
  • Enhance local power systems at SMECO,BGE and Pepco in southern Maryland through multiple upgrades.
  • Ease transmission congestion on the current power grid.
  • Address increasing costs that continue to occur because of an overloaded power system.

Sensitive to Environmental Concerns
MAPP engineers understand that there will be environmental concerns associated with the construction of this new line and are taking a no-shortcuts approach to environmental planning.

  • A majority of the line will be built on or adjacent to existing transmission lines.
  • Much of MAPP’s 70-mile segment in southern Maryland will only involve adding new wires to existing transmission structures. No additional structures will be built.
  • The line will include an underwater crossing of the Chesapeake Bay using the most advanced underwater line placement technology.
  • Years of environmental and archeological study will occur in the bay and other sensitive areas before any construction begins.
  • MAPP planners will meet with environmental groups to seek input throughout the process.
